About Us

As the world continues to change, midwifery needs to change too – but what kind of midwifery services do we want to see by the year 2020?

Midwifery 2020 has been commissioned by the Chief Nurses of the Health Departments of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to set the direction for midwifery and identify the changes needed to the way midwives work, and to their roles, responsibilities and training and development requirements. The project is looking for 2020 vision from midwives, educators, service users, researchers, maternity care professionals, strategists and others. Drawing on this advice and taking account of Government policies, the Midwifery 2020 project will end in 2010 with a report setting out where we want to be in 2020 and how we are going to get there.

Rosemary Kennedy, Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, is Chair of the Midwifery 2020 UK Programme Board and under her Chair the programme will focus on the five agreed workstreams to progress the various strands of work. These workstreams are:

  • The Core Role of the Midwife
  • Education and Career Progression
  • Measuring Quality
  • Public Health Role of the Midwife
  • Workforce & Workload

Leading the project across the UK is Noreen Kent, Programme Director, who highlights the potential of Midwifery 2020; “This is an exciting opportunity for midwives to work in partnership with service users and other key stakeholders to shape the future direction for the profession, while focusing on improving outcomes and experiences for women and their families”.

Scotland Steering Group membership

The Midwifery 2020 Government Leads have recently reviewed the structures that were initially set up to support this programme of work across the UK, and following this review a decision has been taken to disband the Scotland Steering Group.

It was recognised that Scotland already has existing structures in place where Midwifery 2020 is regularly discussed as a standing agenda item, through the Lead Midwives Scotland Group, the Maternity Services Action Group and the Scottish Executive Nurse Director Group (SEND) meetings and this cascading of information through these Groups made the Midwifery 2020 Scotland Steering Group's role superfluous.

Wales Steering Group membership

The Midwifery 2020 Government Leads have recently reviewed the structures that were initially set up to support this programme of work across the UK, and following this review a decision has been taken to disband the Wales Steering Group.

It was recognised that Wales already has existing structures in place where Midwifery 2020 is regularly discussed as a standing agenda item, through the Heads of Midwifery Advisory Group Wales, the Royal College of Midwives UK Board for Wales, Heads of Midwifery Education Wales Group and Consultant Midwives Wales. Cascading of information through these Groups made the Midwifery 2020 Scotland Steering Group's role superfluous.
